Association of British Bookmakers

The Association of British Bookmakers, abbreviated as ABB, is a UK trade organisation for Britain’s betting stores. Bookmakers is one of the largest leisure and retail industries in Britain, serving more than 8,000,000 customers throughout the UK and employing more than 40,000 members of staff. The industry also pumps in more than £3 billion in the British economy.

What Do They Do?

The Association of British Bookmakers’ membership is made up of diverse businesses, ranging from larger, national businesses to smaller, family-run operators. Collectively, the Association of British Bookmakers represents a huge 80 percent of the industry. Some of the ABB’s biggest operators are Ladbrokes, William Hill, Paddy Power and Gala Coral. The organisation continuously works to ensure high and responsible gambling standards are set out at all times through its code of practise.

The Association of British Bookmakers represent the sector to the media and decision-makers, as well submitting issues related to high street betting stores to the Gambling Commission or the Government. Through sending weekly updates and regular newsletters, the Association of British Bookmakers ensures it keeps its members up-to-date with any developments or news occurring in the sector.

Security

Implemented in 2010, the Safe Bet Alliance has been committed to helping ensure high street betting stores are secure places for staff to work in and for customers to place bets in. The Alliance been endorsed for its achievements by the Association of Chief Police Officers and has even won awards for its achievements. This alliance is a credible example of how, when working with the police and other groups, and industry can collectively help overcome issues and problems.

The Association of British Bookmakers also publishes information about the sector to various Parliamentary constituencies about different aspects of the industry, such as the amount of jobs it creates to the average value of the bet being made.
